Site Summary: This site is dedicated to our beautiful and endangered wildlife. Tigers, cheetahs & lynx & their constant fight for survival. Population statistics are included. These precious animals might be lost forever, due to illegal poaching. The black markets are paying top dollar for tiger bones, skin & body parts.
There are 6 tiger sub-species that remain world wide. The estimated total population of all 5 sub species are 5,000 to 5,183 including the ones that are in a circus. The bengal tiger has the most tiger populations of the all sub-species.
Only 600 to 800 Malayan Tigers are estimated to be in the wild.
The last white tiger kill was in India in 1958. Fewer than 12 have been spotted in India for 100 years. In 1990 it was estimated all but 150-170 were left nation-wide.(in zoo's)
Some great news for white tigers.Baby cubs were born in 2 different zoo's. Jan.6-2003-Buenos Aires,Argentina-zoo: A white tigress had 6 cubs.A year and 1/2 prior to that she had 3 cubs. At Natural Bridge Zoo,Virginia,a white tigress had 2 cubs. Good new about the cubs, but sad news for the many tigers who lost their lives in the 1900's,and to this day,are still being slaughtered.
Years ago, demand for fur played a major role,in the out come of the tigers fate. Today illegal poaching, for the black market killing endangered tigers for bones, skin and body parts, are the main reason for their slaughter. These illegal poachiings in the end,may very well finish off the remaining 5 tiger sub-species that were in the wild. What will be left are the ones in zoos and protected parks. Sad,but true.
The white tigers are now found in zoos and or circuses. They are in the same sub-species with the Bengal Tiger. Only 150 to 200 white tigers are all that remain world wide. The good news is the white tiger is finally protected by law. The bad news is,this poor animal no longer has any freedom to roam, they must be kept under lock & key,to be able to survive.
Population statistics on the lynx is about 700 to 1,200. The lynx range is in the North East Cascades,Rocky Mountains & North and South Great Lakes States. Lynx are now being protected from hunters in the United States, except of course for Alaska and Montana.
The asiatic cheetah's are also near extinction with only 200 left. They have been wiped out in Libya and Egypt.
Another big cat which has greatly declined in numbers, are the Lion. The Asiatic Lion is estimated to be 320 in the wild. They are found in Gujarat,India.
Most other Lions are found in Eastern and Southern Africa.(Kenya & Tanzania.) Their numbers have also greatly declined by 30 percent-50 percent over the past 20 years. Due to a mysterious disease in the 1990's,habitat loss and hunters.Estimated in the wild as few as 16,000 and no more than 30,000.
